How to booty twerk

I know you’ll forgive me for this (please?), but I couldn’t have a site about butts and not have a post in here somewhere about how to shake your booty! Today’s topic? How to booty twerk, so you can move and shake your better butt with the best!

‘Twerk’ = Twist + Jerk

Before we get into it, let me give you a bit of an introduction into this increasingly popular move.

The twerk describes a move most unnatural, where the twerker gyrates their hips around in a combination of twisting and jerking.  I have heard that this itself brought about the origin of the word: Twerk = twist + jerk. Another suggested origin of the word is from the phrase to ‘work it’, somehow adapted to ‘twerk it’.

Still having trouble picturing what twerking looks like? Picture a low squatting stance, and rhythmical thrusting hip movements, and you’ve got it.

Due to its provocative look, it’s surrounded by controversy and a bit of ridicule, but maybe not a bad one to add to your repertoire (even if you choose to keep it a secret and only bust it out in exceptional circumstances!).

So why exactly has this funny movement gone so viral?

Basically, it’s a sure way to showcase your booty. Aside from being extremely provocative, it’s also quite entertaining to watch, in it’s own ridiculous way.

Let’s be honest, in some cases, it’s downright impressive that people can shake their butts that fast and with that much movement (and in such an odd manner!). You may even find yourself looking on in a kind of awe thinking: I know this is downright ridiculous, but I didn’t even know that it was possible to move the human body like that!

If you’ve got a bigger butt, this move will showcase your booty in all its glory. For those with a smaller butt, you can still shake your thing, but you might not get as much bounce. Luckily, there are ways to make your butt bigger and more twerk-worthy.

Or, another option you have is to twerk in some of these fantastic booty-magnifying jeans.

How to Booty Twerk 101

So let’s get into it right away.

This video shows you the basics of booty twerking, but I’ve got to tell you it can feel very unnatural at first. If you’re serious about this, then you may need a few hours in the privacy of your own home practicing your ‘twerk’. Nothing to be ashamed of, we all know all the best twerkers were in the same position at some stage.

Breaking it Down

Practice tilting and moving your pelvis first so you can get used to how this movement is supposed to feel. Place your hands on your hips and get the feel for jerking the hips back (pull back with your fingers), or pushing the hips forwards (push forward with your thumbs).

Once you’ve mastered this, you’re ready to begin learning the basics of the twerk:

  1. Place your feet wide apart with your feet angled out to the side at around 45 degrees.
  2. Squat down into a squatting position. You can rest your hands on your knees for comfort/balance.
  3. Arch your back and stick your butt out.
  4. Tilt your pelvis forward while keeping your upper body still.
  5. Jerk your pelvis back again so that your back is arched again.
  6. Repeat – you are now twerking your booty!

It will take time and practice before you’re able to twerk at speed, but keep practicing (in an appropriate location of course), and you’ll soon be booty twerking like a pro.

Twerk at Your Own Risk

Just be aware that if you’re using this move and you’re a female, you are probably going to encourage a lot of attention from the opposite sex, and I can’t guarantee that it will be based on anything more than raw human instinct, if you catch my drift.

If you’re a guy and you want to learn how to booty twerk, then you’ve got a bit more leeway when it comes to busting out this move. While the male butt certainly is attractive to us ladies, it just doesn’t have the same ‘bounce’ or level of sexuality tied to it as the female booty. Which means you can feel free to twerk your way around a bit more often as you’re more likely to get away with it as a comedic act.

Where and When is the Booty Twerk Appropriate?

Here’s some examples of where it’s probably not appropriate to start booty twerking:

  • WeddingsWrong
  • Kid’s birthday parties
  • School dances
  • Family gatherings

And some instances where you might be able to get away with it:

  • When challenged by a dare, doubt that you can execute this move, or the like
  • In da club
  • In a dance-off, if you need to exhibit your obvious superiority
  • If everyone else is doing it and you feel the need to join in
  • Just for fun, if it’s appropriate!
So there you have it, you are now all set to Twerk it baby!

Of course if you’re ready to step it up a notch, why not try out these more advanced tutorials on youtube?

I love this one for it’s comedic payoff:

“so we call that movement a salt shaker, cos you should feel like.. it’s some pepper in the cheeks, and you gotta  plate full o’ green beans, and you wanna pepper up them green beans, with the cheeks”… wait, what the heck did I just watch? I started laughing out loud at about that point.

And did you know that this dance move can be used for a pretty effective cardio leg and butt workout? Check out what this video tutorial can teach you to do by the end of it!

Great post, you’ve definitely provided a step by step breakdown of how to twerk. While the dance itself might help to shed some pounds, due to the sexual connotation surrounding twerking, it’s certainly not the type of dance to showcase at a formal affair (as you’re already rightly pointed out).
