As a staple clothing item in nearly everyone’s wardrobe, I’m sure you’ll agree with me that there’s nothing like finding a pair of jeans so comfortable that you could live in them!

Aside from being comfortable, jeans can also flatter your body shape and show off an incredible looking butt.

If you want to know how to make your butt look good in jeans, then read on to find out what features you should be looking for in a pair of jeans to keep your booty looking fine and fab.

Work With What You’ve Got

Lesson 1 in making your butt look good in jeans is to understand that the way your butt looks in jeans will depend on your original butt shape, size and condition.

You can only work with what you’ve got.

Know what you’re dealing with so that you can choose jeans that draw attention either towards, or away from, aspects of your butt that you do and don’t want noticed. This is why knowing your butt shape can be handy.

Of course, if you’re not too happy with what you’ve got, don’t forget you can always improve how your butt looks through butt-focused exercises as well!

Know Your Best and Worst Features

Now that you have a rough idea about your butt shape and size, Lesson 2 in selecting a pair of jeans that flatter your rear is to know and emphasize your best features, while downplaying your less attractive ones.

While different people have vastly different preferences when it comes to butts, most people generally find a fuller, rounder butt attractive (though I must point out that there is no 1 ‘ideal’ butt).

The following recommendations have been written to help you to create the illusion of a rounder, fuller butt.

Understanding how the illusion of shape is created by certain aspects of jean design will enable you to purchase the right jeans for you.

This means jeans that will work with your individual butt shape to bring you closer to your personal preference of desired look.

Jeans Create a Look

jeans look
Choosing a pair of jeans that will flatter your butt can be challenging sometimes, but follow these tips and you won’t be led astray.

There are many design features that make up a pair of jeans, and a lot of these have an effect on how the jeans will make your butt look when you slip them on.

The 6 features which can make or break a good-looking butt when it comes to jeans are:

  • Pockets
  • Seams
  • Fabric Type
  • Color
  • Stitching
  • Cut

Understanding how each of these design features can make your butt look is critical so that you can select the right pair of jeans.

The right jeans will flatter all your assets rather than accidentally downplaying them due to a poorly fitting design.

Here’s what I believe a BAD jean design looks like.

unflattering jeans explained
These jeans absolutely kill what would otherwise be a cute butt! The person’s actual butt is shown in green, but the design of the jeans gives the optical illusion that the wearer’s butt is actually located where the red outline shows. The overall effect is just downright unflattering.

Why does this look so bad?

The pockets (#1 on our list later in this article) are way too big, and instead of sitting in the middle of each butt cheek, they are falling off the bottom of this person’s butt and cutting it in half.

The yoke (see #2 on our list later in this article) is already 1/3 of the way down this butt, making it appear lower. This also has the effect of flattening the entire butt as the yoke sits on the fullest part of the cheeks.

To fully grasp the (bad) optical illusion that these jeans are creating, I’ve drawn over the photos above to try and explain better.

The green outline shows where this person’s butt actually is located.

They probably actually have a pretty nice butt, though you wouldn’t think it if you saw them wearing these jeans.  The effect of wearing these terrible jeans (which should be incinerated, in my opinion) is that their butt looks lower than it is, and it’s drastically flattened.

R.I.P. any semblance of a nice butt.

The red outline shows where these jeans would need someone’s butt cheeks to actually sit in order to be flatter the wearer’s  butt.

As you can see, the crotch section is so high that this wouldn’t even be possible for someone’s butt to sit in a flattering location when wearing these jeans.

I’m actually getting mad while explaining this, at how horrible this jean design really is!

Once you understand this though, you can shop for GOOD jeans or pants that actually flatter your butt.

Design Features of Jeans Explained

Let’s take a look at each of these jean/pant design aspects in turn, and see how they affect the look of your butt.

#1: Pockets

jeans pocket and yokeThe rear pockets have a major affect on how your butt looks in a pair of jeans. Oversized pockets that cover your entire butt cheek and extend down to the backs of your legs will make your butt look flat and small, no matter how perky it might be sans jeans.

Pocket placement is also a massive determiner of whether or not your butt gets flattered? or just appears flatter? in jeans.

jean pockets
These pockets are placed a little low and not in the center of the cheeks, making the butt appear flat.

Better butt tip: Look for jeans with smaller pockets that are higher up. This will create the illusion of a bigger and perkier butt. As a guide, you’ll get the best look when the pockets are centered near the fullest part of your butt. If the pockets are angled slightly inwards that’s an extra bonus, as this also helps to create the illusion of a curvier booty.

badjeans
Bad jeans – on the left is a case example of pockets which are too low and below the ‘cheek’. In my opinion these can make even nice butts look weird.

#2: Seams and the All-Important ‘Yoke’

The location of seams (where two pieces of material join together) on a pair of jeans can influence the way your jeans fit as well as drawing the eye towards particular aspects on you.

jeans back and yoke
The yoke is the seam seen below the waistband and above the rear pockets. This is a straight yoke, which unfortunately will do nothing to flatter your butt shape.

Pay particular attention to the yoke of the jeans, which is the straight or V-shaped seam common on most jeans and found just below the waistband on the back side.

The yoke will have a major influence on how a pair of jeans makes you butt look, and there are actually several different types of yoke styles out there – check out this article to get schooled.

Better butt tip: To create the illusion of a fuller, rounder butt, opt for jeans with a upward arc/rounded or “heart shaped” yoke seam, which will accentuate the roundness of your butt. Depending on your butt shape, an inverted yoke may also work for you.  Avoid straight seam yokes and deep-V yokes which can make for a flat, saggy looking butt in jeans.

The yoke should be positioned around the top part of your butt to create the illusion of fullness and perkiness, and probably no lower than half-way between the top of your butt and the fullest part of your butt to prevent the saggy or low-butt look.

butt in jeans
Small pockets on these jeans work a treat, but the low sitting V-shaped yoke makes the butt appear smaller – see how the low yoke basically cuts this poor butt in half horizontally!! This gives the illusion of less volume.

It’s worth noting that another seam type that is known to flatter butts is the ‘scruch bum’ seam. Though I’m yet to see this implemented in any jeans, the principles of having a closer-fitting center ‘butt crack’ seam, also helps promote the volume of each individual butt cheek, rather than flattening your booty into a ‘unibutt’.

#3: Fabric Type

For women, fitted jeans with some stretch give a much better look than stiff, heavy denim. Fabric with a bit of stretch around the butt creates the illusion of more ‘junk in the trunk’ and a fuller, rounder butt – at the same time fitted jeans also get rid of that saggy butt look created by having excess material bunched up below your butt.

For the guys, fitted stretch jeans (especially around the legs) is most likely not a desired look, but you can still opt for jeans made of a a thinner, more pliable denim blend that will show off your butt shape better than stiff heavy denim which tends to cover any nice butt that you might be hiding under those jeans.

guys jeans
Big pockets, V-shape yoke, stiff heavy material = wasted potential. Sigh.

Better butt tip: Look for more flexible denim material blends with a bit of stretch, that will hug your butt a little more closely and show off your butt shape.

#4: Colorjeans colors 2

Jean color is another factor which can either draw attention to or away from your butt. If you don’t want to draw attention to your butt, then opt for a darker denim or even black jeans.

Lighter or bright colors tend to attract more attention and catch the eye.

Better butt tip: Light fading on the butt cheek area of your jeans will draw the eye to the area and create the illusion of a rounder butt and more volume  in the cheek area.

#5: Stitching

Embellished stitching or designs, especially on rear pockets and the yoke, can draw the eye towards these features, and if they are selected properly it can create a very flattering overall appearance. emellished pocketThis is how it is possible to create the illusion of a bigger butt. Stay away from any kind of crazy stitching if you don’t want to emphasize or draw attention to your butt.

Better butt tip: Draw more attention to your butt by choosing jeans with that stand out with colored stitching. If you prefer to draw the eye elsewhere instead of to your butt, then opt for jeans with stitching that blends in with the color of the jean fabric.

#6: Cut

Choosing a cut of jeans that emphasize all the right curves in all the right places is one of the secrets to making your butt look good in a pair of jeans.jeans-display

Depending on your butt shape, the cut of your jeans may affect your overall look.

A good looking butt can be showcased quite well in skinny jeans or jeans with a fitted leg, but if your butt is small then stay away from boot cut and flared styles, as these tend to draw the eye away from the butt.

Better butt tip: If you have a larger butt and wish to downplay this feature, go for boot cut or flared jeans to draw the eye away from your butt and balance out your curves. For those with smaller butts, go for a skinny jeans to make your butt look bigger in comparison to your legs.

Nice tips here. I’ve never really paid much attention to this when shopping (I’m not much of a shopper. Generally if the clothes are cheap I’ll get it).

I also can’t stand, guys usually, who don’t know how to wear jeans. I don’t really see it around now thankfully, but I think maybe earlier in 2000s when the whole skater/low rider look was the thing? Never got into wearing pants that were falling off.

I find a lot of men’s back jean pockets quite big and doesn’t really help. I think next time I go looking for jeans I’ll be looking at these other things and take a closer look in the mirror

Unfortunately men’s jeans aren’t generally built to show off the butt much, which is why you’ll have difficulty finding anything without massive pockets and quite heavy fabric as a guy. Thankfully the whole ‘saggy jeans’ look from a while back has now been replaced, but I still see some low-riders from time to time… one sure way on how to not emphasize your butt!

Nice!! I love getting those type of jeans lol pockets really make SUCH A BIG DIFFERENCE-I am small by nature but I have I guess what they call “bubble butt” and if I don’t get the pockets and material right I will look like I have a completely..FLAT a**, which I totally do not! Isn’t it crazy how just a pair of jeans can literally transform your body from an hourglass into straight line, or even vice versa- There are times when I am out and about and will notice some lady[or]girl who is wearing the wrong jeans for her shape; it usually looks like this: Super low skinny’s, with a tight tank top or crop shirt, love handles spilling out over the side of the jeans to where you can not even see the top of the pant, pockets positioned so low half of the pocket goes down the back of the thigh, causing the rear to , I must resist the urge to tell her how MUCH better she would look in some HIGH waist booty shaping jeans, with a tunic or blouse- but I’m not sure she would appreciate the advice much as I would like! So this is a great article, thanks:)

Yes! I totally noticed this again just the other day when trying on a pair of old jeans. They’re a little loose in the waist band so the pockets sit half on my butt, and half on the back of my thigh. However, when I pulled them up a few inches so the pockets sit in the right spot, suddenly I had the best looking butt ever! It really does make a difference to have pockets sitting in the middle of your butt cheeks, it gives you a MUCH better looking butt. I find that anything else makes my butt look flat.

I fully agree with the low-waist jeans as well, a higher cut definitely tends to enhance curves!

Jean companies clearly need to take some lessons from designs of the late 70s and early 80s … lift and separate works with jeans just like bras … and i’m a man reading this article .. when the pocket goes slightly below the ‘cheek’ it makes the pants look ill fitting

I cannot agree more JJ. Since writing this article, I have been on the lookout for these features in jeans to flatter my butt, but it’s really difficult to find a pair of jeans that does so! It’s surprising that even the big brands like Levis don’t seem to do pockets which are centered on the cheeks (boo!!)

I added a picture of exactly what you are talking about with the pockets below the cheek to the article to illustrate the point!

I’m a mature male, an artist and sculptor, and find that the male body’s is (should be) as attractive as a woman’s. A male’s buns have a chance to show their shape in proper jeans. I choose jeans with “no rear pockets”, my favorites are the ones made for woman in South America, soft stretchy denim fabric, nice rear yoke, high waist, The high waist makes then an ideal fit for men. I get as many nice compliments from woman as other men. And they feel so good and sexy on.

The butts in the jeans advertised at the end of this article are ridiculous! Even for people that prefer a fuller bottom. There is a limit. No one in their right mind is looking for butts like that!

Hey Amy! I hear you girl, I totally used to think so too (I’m very conservative in my fashion choices, and pretty shy so I hate wearing anything that will get me too noticed!) – but its so funny when you try something like this on for yourself and look in the mirror and get that thought: “omg, is that my butt?”
It’s surprisingly empowering hahaha. I’ve got some Levi’s that aren’t quite as bling-y as the ones pictured, but they definitely make my butt look bigger and better. Did I mention they are now my favorite pair of jeans?
I think was does add to making them look a bit much is that the model that’s wearing the jeans is already quite well blessed in the butt department too, so keep that in mind!
      Thanks for commenting 🙂

As a man over 50, i grew up wearing 100% cotton denim and still do. But it is getting difficult to find because of the fascination with stretchyness. I tried the new cotton stretchy blends, after a few hours of work or play they begin to sag in places that 100% cotton does not. True 100% cotton is not as comfortable at first, until broken in, but it holds it shape and shows off my package as good as it did in the 1970’s. Most guys don’t wear moose knuckles these days because they are either to modest, think it makes them queer, or complain that it’s uncomfortable, i still wear moose knuckles and can still make babies because my balls have not been damaged by tight 100% cotton jeans.

Interesting! When it comes to women’s jeans, I don’t think I’ve ever seen 100% cotton denim ones anywhere, they always have some blend that makes them stretchy.
Moose knuckles are not something I have heard of before though, haha!

Hi I appreciate everything mentioned here for best fit for butt. I would like to add something I rarely see which is for my butt type—a roundish apple shape I think?—center butt seam along with some stretch cotton fabric. Like great Levi’s the seam comes up about 1/4 way butt cheeks, accentuating and rounding out my butt. Same for panties which I won’t even purchase without a center seam. One exception with boy shorts (some Tommy John s look great no matter seam or not)

Thanks for your input Terese! That’s a great design feature, I have noticed the center butt seam does really help accentuate any kind of butt usually. Reminds me of the scrunch butt seam that became popular on leggings a while ago – purely because they really make one’s booty pop.
