What on earth is a glute strap?!

I know. I thought the exact same thing when I first saw the name. You’ll be happy to know (I hope) that no, it’s not some kind of weird kinky g-string that wedges all up in there. It’s actually a piece of exercise equipment, and quite a useful one at that.

I stumbled upon this product during my usual booty-building research, and decided to write a semi review on this bit of kit. If you read on, you’ll learn what exactly the Glute Strap is, how it works, and why I think you need to have one of these if you’re doing kick backs at the gym!

The Glute Strap : An Overview

The Glute Strap from XTREME Fitness Products is a specialized piece of exercise equipment designed to activate and workout the gluteal muscles, and is used instead of a traditional ankle cuff.  Use it with a cable machine at the gym (or even resistance bands at home).

Superior to the Ankle Cuff for Glute Exercises

The main selling point of the Glute Strap is that it transfers the resistance from whatever you attach the strap to, straight into your heel. If you’ve done any butt exercises before, you’ll most likely have heard the advice “push through your heels” – well, the Glute Strap allows you to do exactly that.

Compare this to a traditional ankle cuff strap which fastens around the ankle. The point of attachment not around your foot, it’s higher up on your lower leg. This is much less ideal for glute exercises such as cable kick backs, and because of the poor transfer of weight, many people struggle to feel these exercises in their butt.

How It Works

The video below introduces the glute strap and shows how it works for  donkey kicks using a cable machine.

The main band of the Glute Strap loops low around your foot instead of around your ankle, like a regular ankle cuff would.

The straps sit underneath the sole of your shoe, effectively anchoring any weight you are pulling into foot and back of the heel.

The two metal loops are then attached by carabiner clips to a cable resistance machine, or a set of resistance bands like these.

Exercises

As for exercises to be used with the Glute Strap, the makers of this great little device also have a free youtube channel showing how to do a heap of different butt-building exercises and others that all use the Glute Strap.

Not all of these exercises are butt exercises, but the demonstrations are good for giving you some idea of how to use this strap in your workouts.

The Good & The Bad

The Good

  • Innovative yet simple – solves a major flaw of the ankle cuff when doing glute exercises.
  • Small and lightweight, can easily fit in your gym bag to take to the gym.
  • Works the glutes, especially for those who struggle with glute activation… need I say more?
  • Money back guarantee.

The Bad

  • Expensive. However, you will get good use out of it if you incorporate the exercises shown regularly.
  • Need equipment to use it – either a gym cable resistance machine, or resistance bands with clips.
  • Can’t be adapted for connection of the resistance on the side of the foot.

Who Will Enjoy the Glute Strap?

If you love cable kick backs and donkey kicks as much as I do, you will love this strap. I’ve not come across a better way to get the most glute activation from these exercises.

If you’re a gym-goer, this is a fantastic item to bring along when you hit the gym, plus it is so small that it is easily carried.

Not only are the ankle cuffs at the gym questionably unhygienic (who knows who has been sweating profusely into them…), but they simply won’t help you hit your glutes with rear leg extensions as well as something like the Glute Strap will.

Rave Reviews

One thing I always check for when reviewing products is the number and quality of other users’ reviews.

The Glute Strap has got some great reviews on Amazon, and it seems that plenty of people are happy using it.

Who Isn’t it For?

If you’re not even familiar with any of the exercises that the Glute Strap is used for, and don’t see yourself trying these anytime soon, then obviously the Glute Strap is not really for you.

It is somewhat expensive for what it is, so unless you are a regular kickbacker or donkey kick king or queen, then the higher price might not be worth paying.

I think people who actively go to the gym will get the most value out of this product, even though I have to laugh a bit at the marketing that is used to promote the strap:

Overall Impressions

After checking out the Glute Strap, I would probably be keen to get one if I had access to a gym! I’m not active at a gym at the moment, so it’s not worth the higher price for me just yet, though I am interested in looking at how to rig up a resistance-band setup for this at home.

I really love the design of this product – so simple yet majorly effective – why doesn’t every gym have one of these attachments for their cable resistance machines?  It certainly would make booty-building a lot easier.

Despite the higher price, the Glute Strap really does work to increase the effectiveness of traditional butt exercises like cable kickbacks and donkey kicks in activating the glutes, and I have to say that that’s what I’m definitely all about.

Summary

A specialized butt-targeting replacement for a traditional ankle cuff that attaches to your foot instead.

This one simple change will get you some serious gluteal muscle burn when doing rear cable kick backs and donkey kicks.

    Hey Jolie,
I found your review very interesting. You give a lot of information about the Glute Strap. I especially like the fact that you have so many videos. It is a great visual when you actually show the different ways to do exercises. Is there a weight limit for the Glute strap?
Thanks again for the great info.
    Chris

Good question Chris, the manufacturer info says that it can easily handle up to to 300 pounds. It does have reinforced stitching and is made of quality materials. If you are doing the types of cable kickbacks and extensions that it is suggested for, it’s pretty unlikely that you’d be working with enough weight to be anywhere near the breaking limits of the strap.

I’ve used the ankle strap before and haven’t been thrilled with it. This looks much better. But can you recommend some exercises that are your favorites to use this with? I know you’ve got the youTube there with a bunch of awesome videos. But I’m 8 months pregnant and am not sure which would work better in addition to the myriad of squats that I already do.

Hi Sarah! If you’re looking for some butt exercises with the glute strap, I would say keep it simple and go with donkey kicks, cable kick backs, or hip extensions; in my opinion these are the kinds of exercises that the glute strap was truly designed for, and should be pregnancy-friendly!

I’m happy to try anything that will kick my workout up a notch, and this handy device looks like it will do the trick. I have been to various gyms, where it’s obvious they’re trying to get away with the most basic equipment. Sometimes there aren’t even the usual attachments you’d expect to see. The Glute Strap will take care of that problem. Easy to carry in you gym bag, and the youtube channel is a definite selling point.

I’m yet to see this glute strap in any of the gyms I’ve been to, but needless to say I’d be very impressed if I did find this attachment at a gym! It’s very novel, and I’ve been really impressed at the simplicity of the idea. It definitely is a great little accessory to take along with you 🙂

Hi Jolie! That was an excellent review of the Glute strap exercise device used to get your rear end toned. I am into fitness myself through bicycling so I understand the need for people to try and get their bodies into the best shape possible.

Are you yourself a fitness instructor? I was very impressed with your knowledge of the device and particularly in the manner in which you reviewed it in your article. This included both videos and images so that the reader can visually see exactly how the Glute strap would work as well as its benefits!

An excellent job on your part Jolie as clearly seen in the extremely informative article!

    Sincerely,
    Jeff

Hi Jeff! Thanks for your kind words! No, I am not a fitness instructor myself, but I do have a very keen interest in all things exercise-related and also in biomechanics and anatomy! I’ve been meaning to post an article on bicycling soon and how it could relate to glute fitness – keep an eye out for it!
