Overview of the Lower Body Makeover by Joey Atlas

Some of you may have heard of Joey before from his ‘Truth About Cellulite‘ product which is becoming quite popular. From what I can tell though, the lower body makeover program that I will be reviewing today is one of the original products from Joey Atlas.

‘Lower body makeover’, or ‘The Ultimate Leg, Butt, Hip and Thigh Makeover’ as it is formally titled, is an exercise routine designed to enhance your lower body through targeted exercises. Forget cardio or high-intensity circuit work – this one’s all about bodyweight exercises carried out under control and in a specific sequence that will fatigue your muscles to amplify the effectiveness of the workout.Joey Atlas lower body makeover review

I have only trialed the earlier DVD version of the Ultimate Leg, Butt, Hip and Thigh Makeover, so I haven’t purchased this particular ebook since it’s been re-packaged. I did however review what has changed and what you can expect if you purchase this product.

A Sneak Peak into the Lower Body Makeover Program

The program is delivered in a downloadable ebook format, and presented as a series of photographs and written instructions on how to perform each exercise.

It’s basically a manual of several lower body stretches and around 30 or so bodyweight exercises for the lower body. split into 2 parts (level 1 and level 2). Each level incorporates both floor exercises done on a mat, and standing exercises. The workout is designed to be able to be completed from home, however you will need a swiss ball and a step to do some of the exercises, and an exercise mat for the floor exercises if you prefer.

Joey Atlas Ultimate Lower Body Makeover exercise preview

Level 1 and level 2 routines are provided, with the level 2 routine being very similar to the level 1 routine. The main difference is that the exercises given in level 2 are more difficult variations of the level 1 exercises, and the order is reversed (you start with standing exercises and move to the mat afterwards, as opposed to the other way around for level 1).

Pros

  1. Nice quiet home workout

Can be carried out at home with minimal equipment required. You will however, need a swiss ball, step, and maybe an exercise mat for floor exercises if you prefer (though I was able to do the workout fine without using a mat). For those living in apartments, this one is quite ‘noiseless’, as you won’t be doing too much jumping around.

  1. Good variety of exercises

The exercises consist of a ‘floor routine’ which are exercises performed on the mat, and then a ‘standing routine’, exercises performed from standing. The standing series mostly involves a lot of lunges and squats and their variations, while the mat series has a range of exercises. Most of the exercises I had come across before, but there were a few new ones that I found to be surprisingly effective.Joey Atlas Ultimate Lower Body Makeover exercises

  1. Specific to the lower body, and it does work

If carried out as per the instructions, these exercises will tone up your lower body, which is great for many women who have problem areas around their legs, hips and butt. They are also sequenced quite nicely and in a way that is designed to fatigue your muscles so that you will feel the burn, which really gets those muscles working.

Cons

  1. Fairly low-grade product

Make no mistake, this one looks like something you could have whipped up at home yourself in just a few hours – so at the $39.97 price tag, many see the product and immediately feel like they have paid too much for what it is. The most professional-looking part of this product is the front cover of the ebook, but that’s about it.

I actually started with the DVD version of The Ultimate Leg, Butt, Hip and Thigh Makeover (ULBHTM), which from what I can understand, was the original product and even more budget-looking. It has since been remade into the ebook, which does lose out on some aspects that the ULBHTM exercise DVDs did have, as some exercises aren’t as clearly explained in the book and you also miss seeing how slowly and controlled you should be doing the exercises (something emphasized strongly in the DVDs but not as much in the ebook).

  1. Overly hyped by marketing

If Joey spent as much time on product presentation as he did on his (bordering on scam-like) marketing that plays on women’s insecurities, this problem would be quickly erased, but I really feel that the product is massively over-hyped for what it is, and this is why many people feel scammed when they see the quality of the product after purchasing. There are a lot of positive rave reviews of the product on the Lower Body Makeover website, but not so many that can be found elsewhere on the internet- which makes me wonder: are they authentic? I can’t make up my mind yet about how I feel about Joey Atlas, but I do get a slight feeling of discomfort when I think about his marketing tactics.

Joey Atlas lower body makeover testimonials

  1. Flaky support and broken promises

In the course of my research I saw more than a few reviewers who had asked for their money back after realizing what they’d purchased was far from the professional product package that the advertising and marketing would have you believe. One selling point is that this product comes with a 60 day money back guarantee, which is supposed to make you feel safer in purchasing the product. A few reported no response what-so-ever, though one did claim she received a refund but with some difficulty.

Who is it For?

If you’re not tight on money and want a great routine of lower body exercises that works (and don’t mind that it’s not the most professionally-presented package), then I would recommend the Lower Body Makeover to you. I did the exercises and they are quite effective, there is good sequencing and with the proper use these exercises will get you positive results. It is especially effective for those who don’t already do a lot of exercise, and a great beginner routine as the exercises are not too intense.

Who isn’t it For?

If you’re already into health and fitness, and exercise regularly, you’ve probably seen a lot of these bodyweight exercises before and wouldn’t be learning a great deal of new information. I also found the exercises to be relatively easy, though I did feel them working I imagine that it wouldn’t be long before the body got used to these, and the program doesn’t seem to push the concept of progressive overload very much other than stepping it up from 10 reps to around 20 reps.

Equipment and Training

As mentioned earlier, the only specialist equipment needed is a swiss exercise ball and a step to do some of the exercises outlined. If you want to, you can also get an exercise mat for comfort, but I found that a towel laid on the carpeted floor was comfortable enough.

The instruction given in the ebook is nothing special. I already knew how to do the exercises from watching the ULBHTM DVDs, but reading through the pictures and descriptions may be a bit confusing for some, especially if you are new to the whole exercising thing. Personally I think the DVDs demonstrate how to perform the exercises better, as well as giving more tips on correct form when doing the exercises.

Support

I haven’t had any first-hand experience in this yet, but first impressions and reading the experiences of others leads me to suspect that the support is second rate.

Feel free to do your own research, but personally I am leaning towards not putting too much trust in the 60 day money-back guarantee, as you might be more likely to get no response (judging from the experiences of others).

The website also looks out of date and inactive, with no new blog posts since 2012, and a bunch of unanswered comments, so I wouldn’t count on getting any questions answered in a hurry. To be honest, I think Joey has moved on to bigger and better things and maybe all his efforts are now invested in his ‘Truth About Cellulite‘ product, because the Lower Body Makeover website and support almost looks as though it has been largely abandoned for the most part.

Price

TFatness to fitnesshe Lower Body Makeover product is valued at $39.97, which I personally think is way too high for what it is. Personally I think a price tag of around $15 would be more appropriate and at this level I would feel there was value for money.

One thing that might make it a little more worthwhile is the heap of bonuses you get, including a digital version of Joey’s book “Fatness to Fitness“, links to online workout videos (presumably different to the Lower Body Makeover exercises), various reports on cardio and sculpting a sexy lower body, etc.. but I wouldn’t pay any attention to the reported dollar value of these (drastically over-hyped, and if they are anything like the earlier version of the bonuses that I got with my DVD program, they are also fairly low-grade).

My Final Opinion and Recommendation

I would recommend this product to people, if it were at a lower price. Since the exercises presented are quite good, and if any of the bonuses offered appeal to you, then my suggestion would be to try it out for yourself given that you are safe under the 60 day money back guarantee, and could always return it if you were not totally happy with what you get.

Unfortunately, I have to refrain from making that recommendation too, since I’m not too sure if you would ever see your money back. You’re probably better to steer clear of this one unless you are genuinely willing to risk that $39.97 on what I’ve described to you in this review.

Hi Jolie. What a very informative article about the lower body workouts. These are definitely the most concerned areas for women. Thanks.

This is a very comprehensive review, thank you. There are so many exercise “how tos” out there so it’s good to know before buying. $39.97 is no chump change these days.

    Hi Jolie,
This is a very thorough, and honest product review . You tell what it is , what it does and why or why not I should buy it. Very nice. Also thanks for the heads up on the unsavory customer service. Great Job!

Hi Marant, poor customer service just doesn’t fly these days, it’s unfortunate that some companies still allow this to happen. Thanks for your feedback and I’m glad you like the review 🙂

I received one of Joeys CD’s that skipped while playing, I told Joey about it on his community site, I was sent another CD right away. I have asked him several questions, he replied, some right away, some within a resonable amount of time, I have even talked with him during one of his live work outs. I agree his videos are not top quaity, but the exercises are perfect for me, and the information he educates on food towards a better eating habit life style is well worth the lower quality videos. I’d rather have low quality video’s with high quality information, than have high quality video’s with bad for you information.

That’s awesome Katheleen, I agree it’s always great when creators support their products. It’s been many years since I wrote my original review of this product, and at the time I did see a few broken promises. Thank you for adding in your experience here – I’ll put it on my to-do list to update my review if Joey is still selling this product. I agree that when I did review his course at the time, the exercises were no-doubt effective, which is what you’re paying for really. Do you have the Lower Body Makeover program, or some other one? Thanks again for your comment!
