The Empower 3-in-1 Adjustable Kettlebell: An Overview

Empower’s adjustable kettlebell is a versatile option for the casual kettlebell user. This sand-filled plastic coated kettlebell is capable of adjusting to 5lb, 8lb and 12lb, with an easy-to-use twist-lock mechanism.

However, the twist-lock mechanism does seem to wear out over time, which makes this weight not the best option for the serious kettlebeller.

This video gives you a better look at the kettlebell itself, and shows the mechanism which allows you to stack weights:

What You Get

If you buy from Amazon, you get a nice little package deal which includes a bonus kettlebell workout DVD instructed by Gin Miller.

  • 3-in-1 adjustable kettlebell, capable of the following combinations when assembled:
    • 5lb total weight (5lb kettlebell base)
    • 8lb total weight (5 lb kettlebell base + 3lb middle plate)
    • 12lb total weight (5 lb kettlebell base + 3lb middle plate + 4lb bottom plate)
  • Swing Yourself Fit workout DVD
  • Illustrated workout guide

The Good & The Bad

The Good
  • Saves space/money by combining 3 different weights into one unit!
  • Quick adjustment method
  • Bonus workout DVD and exercise poster included
  • Attractive finish and space-saving design
  • Smooth-grip comfortable handle
The Bad
  • Plastic finish can be slippery for gripping the handle and changing weights
  • Handle grip is just a little too small for double-handed grip
  • Durability over time – if the twist-lock mechanism breaks, you can’t stack weights anymore

Who Is The Empower 3-in-1 Adjustable Kettlebell For?

Empower’s adjustable kettlebell is mainly suited for beginners who are looking to get into using kettlebells.

For the kettlebell newbie, this is a great introductory package which includes the DVD that will teach you some kettlebell exercises that you can use with your new equipment.

The design of the kettlebell is easy-to-use and gives you a lot of versatility with the different weight ranges.

Who Isn’t it For?

One complaint about this kettlebell is that it doesn’t go heavy enough – some people find that 12lb is too light. This will depend on what kind of exercises you want to do with kettlebells, but I agree that 12lb might be a bit on the light side if you want to do exercises like kettlebell swings.

This kettlebell will probably not impress advanced kettlebell users, but does serve as an excellent introductory piece of equipment that is versatile enough to help you get a feel for whether or not you will enjoy kettlebell workouts and exercises.

Swing Yourself Fit Kettlebell Exercise DVD

Swing Yourself Fit DVD that comes with the 3-in-1 kettlebell. It costs around $10 on Amazon, so is a great included bonus.

A nice touch is the included DVD program which is a great way to learn some kettlebell exercises. Gin Miller is a good instructor, though some more advanced people might find the workouts to be too slow-paced.

For beginners though, it is ideal, and a lot of people have given positive feedback on the workouts. The short workout times make it easy to fit one or more workouts into your daily routine.

You get 3 workouts included with the DVD:

  • Cardio (11 minutes)
  • Upper Body (12 minutes)
  • Total Body (14 minutes)

What The Reviews Say

I had a good look at a lot of Empower 3-in-1 adjustable kettlebell reviews in order to make my mind up about this product.

In general, the reviews are positive – people really love the kettlebell’s adjustability, convenience and sleek design. I also think that the 3-in-1 idea is the best selling feature of this product. It really is a space and money saver to be able to combine 3 different weights into one.

However, there were some negatives that I uncovered as well. One or two people had problems with the durability of the kettlebell. It seems like this might be an issue for you if you intend to use the kettlebell very frequently – the twist-lock mechanism may break or become difficult to operate.

Overall Impressions

After reviewing the 3-in-1 kettlebell by Empower, I’d have to say that it’s not for me, but it definitely does look like a cool product for anyone looking for an affordable way to start out in the kettlebell world! Three separate kettlebell weights would cost a lot more than this combined unit, so it can be an affordable way to get started.

However, if you’re serious about working with kettlebells, you’ll more than likely need to upgrade to a more durable product later. This 3-in-1 option does, however, seem to be a good way to ‘test the waters’ for the casual kettlebell user.

Thank you for the honest review of this product. Most reviews I have seen, especially fitness ones, are always about how incredible this is, how fast I’m going to lose weight or build muscle, but never tell me what the catch is. A product like this is definitely not for the hardcore lifter or gym-goer, but would make an excellent option for someone that only has some free time every now and then, or even a great office gift to get some work outs in between meetings!

Thanks Mark, I do agree that it’s more suited towards the beginner or those who are just looking to get into using kettlebells. That’s actually not a bad idea for keeping one of these at the office, it would fit quite easily underneath one’s desk!

Good idea, makes me think of those dumbbells that do this, but I can see it getting too light quick, especially for guys. Probably good for an intro to it though, kettlebells can get really expensive!

Nice that it comes with a workout guide, seems geared well for newbies

Yeah, this product is definitely an entry-level one. I did a bit more research and the Rocketlok adjustable kettlebell is the best adjustable kettlebell I’ve come across so far. It also goes a bit heavier, which is good for anyone looking for a bit more weight than these Empower ones can offer!

    Hello

Excellent article, I was just browsing when I came across your article. Thank you for sharing this information with us, I have found some very useful pointers to take away with me. I know others will also benefit from it. You clearly know your stuff.

My question is how would I approach giving this to a girlfreind, would it not be a huge insult to offer this as a gift ?

again thank you for sharing, I know many people will benefit from knowing this now. I hope to hear from you soon, I will pop back in a few days to hear your response.

This can be a tricky situation Jack, and it is highly dependent on the individual how they might react to receiving exercise equipment as a gift (as well as all kinds of subtleties that may happen when you actually present the gift).

Since I don’t know your particular situation, I’d advise caution against giving this as a gift, unless your girlfriend is already into exercise and fitness, and you know she works out at home using dumbbells or similar.

That doesn’t mean all hope is lost though! You might still be able to encourage your girlfriend to take up this healthy habit. The best way to do this is to lead by example and see if she has any interest. For example, you yourself could take up kettlebells, then let her see you actively working out on several occasions. Tell her (subtly) about all the awesome benefits you are getting from it and how it’s improving your self esteem. After a while of this, you might be able to gently suggest that she should join you in your workouts because it could be fun, and see how she reacts.

A website all about the booty, how great haha.
I’m a passionate lifter so I enjoy this. However I don’t have anything for home workouts surprisingly. I’ve been wanting to get weights for home but haven’t gotten to it yet. I’ll definitely need a kettlebell but probably a heavier one!

I’m also passionate about lifting, it’s one of the best ways to get a better butt! Yeah, this 3-in-1 kettlebell is a bit light-on so it’s mostly suited towards beginners. If you’re after an adjustable set though, check out the Rocketlok series. They go heavier (up to 36 lb), with a similar compact design for home storage!

What a good idea to have a kettlebell that can be adjusted to three different weights. I have ordinary dumbbells but their static weight is not challenging anymore and I was thinking of actually changing to kettlebells. My daughter always uses kettlebells and she swears by them but she does use 3 or 4 different sizes and they are heavier than the top weight of the kettlebell advertised. I think it would suit the older person who would probably prefer not to use too heavy a weight. It looks to be ideal for women, I can’t see men using it at all, but who knows. Ches

Totally agree Ches, these do seem more suited for the beginner or perhaps older people who are not as confident using heavy weights. Hope you do decide to make the switch to kettlebells, they can be quite fun!
