I wrote earlier about how skin brushing can be a way to improve the appearance of your cellulite.

I myself skin brush everyday as part of my daily routine and it’s a lovely way to start the day with an invigorating skin brushing session, not to mention that I also get to reap all the awesome benefits of skin brushing!

However, there are so many different products out there that it can be difficult to know what to buy, so let’s look at how to choose the best dry brush for cellulite.

Tips for Choosing What Kind of Dry Brush to Get

If you’re choosing a dry brush to target cellulite, you may want to go for one with firm fingers, or even a cellulite massager-type ‘brush’.

My mom has had great results on her cellulite using a brush with firm fingers, whereas I use a natural bristle brush that works to exfoliate the skin more.

Soft Bristle Brush

Soft bristle cellulite brush

A soft bristle brush has lots of fine bristles which can be made from either synthetic or natural materials. Always opt for a natural bristle brush, which may include boar bristle or plant based fibers, as synthetic materials have the potential to irritate the skin and in my opinion, they won’t distribute your natural skin oils as well as a natural bristle brush will.

Soft bristle brushes are ideal for assisting in sloughing off the outer layer of dead skin cells and when used for dry brushing they are an excellent exfoliation method. They can also improve the appearance of cellulite, however because of the softer bristles it is not possible to apply much pressure to work into the deeper layers of the skin.

Firm Brush

Firm brush

The firm brushes have stiff fingers/nodules on the brush rather than bristles, but you’ll want to choose one which also has a large enough nodule size so that the massage is not painful. The stiffness of the nodules will allow you to apply as little or as much pressure as you like when brushing.

A firmer pressure when dry skin brushing has the benefit of working into the deeper tissues to combat cellulite by increasing circulation at a deeper level, but will not give as much benefit as a soft bristle brush when it comes to exfoliation of the outer layer of the skin.

As you work with a firm brush like this you are moving more into the realm of massage which is a great way to break up cellulite. Using a dry brush as a gentle massage will give you the same benefits as any kind of cellulite massager to get rid of dimply skin.

Depending on the material the nodules are made from you can also take the opportunity to perform your brushing session using your favorite moisturizer or lotion.

Which Type of Brush Should I Choose?

If you’re not sure whether to go with a soft brush or a firm brush, considering the following may help you choose which type of dry brush will suit you best.

How the brush will feel

A soft brush feels like a scratchy sensation due to the fine bristles and depending on where on your body you are using it, this can be uncomfortable or unpleasant for some.

A firm brush may also feel unpleasant to begin with to some people – though it is less ‘scratchy’ and more pressure-based. Thicker nodules on a firm brush may be more comfortable to some.

While the sensation of dry brushing can be unpleasant at first if you’ve never done it before, know that it quickly becomes tolerable and actually very pleasant to continue with.

I know this sounds weird, but as soon as you stop brushing it leaves you with a nice sensation that is very ‘more-ish’, and I’ve had many a brushing session where I’ve gone to stop but then just had to pick up my brush again because it simply feels so good!

Dry brushing – it will make you feel refreshed, but is not as shocking as this!

The results you are after

A soft brush will do more to exfoliate the skin and improve the bloodflow to the surface of the skin. You will mostly use light pressure, but sometimes you can apply heavier pressure if the particular brushes bristles are sturdy, and this can help work into the deeper tissues somewhat.

A firm brush is the way to go if you want to work deep into the underlying skin tissues, and this is probably the most beneficial for those suffering from more severe cases of cellulite because it will improve drainage in the tissues in much the same way a massage would. Since you can apply more pressure with a firm brush it is great for this purpose, but the downside is that it doesn’t offer as much benefit in the way of skin exfoliation as a soft brush would

Dry Brushing Doesn’t Have to be Expensive!

You don’t have to spend big to start out. I know my mom got started using a hairbrush she already had lying around the house (similar to the one pictured above) and she saw great results in reducing her cellulite, all for the grand cost of $0.

Not bad!

I myself started out using a soft boar bristle hair brush that I bought from a $2 store which has lasted me for over 5 years now.

However, if you don’t have anything suitable around the house, or want to start out with purpose-made equipment, there are plenty of low-cost products that will do the trick. Here are just a few options that you can purchase for a low price through Amazon by clicking through on the product title or image.

Soft Bristle Brushes

Here are three soft bristle dry brushes that can be used for improving your cellulite, as well as promoting a more radiant, brighter skin tone and complexion. My favorite is the hand held Fantasea brush, which is a standard dry body brush, but if you plan to use this over your entire body then getting a long handled version which comes with a detachable head can be the way to go.

Fantasea Natural Bristle Body Brush

[amazon_link asins=’B0035RE2TA’ template=’ProductCarousel’ store=’thebetbutcha-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’19d6b808-ce7f-11e7-b800-67ae09fb3c95′]

Features:  This hand held, natural boar bristle brush is the perfect size for travel and can be had at a great price. This brush is amazing for the very affordable price and will last years.

As mentioned earlier, while I did start out using an ordinary natural bristle hair brush, when I finally did upgrade to this purpose-built body brush, I was really amazed at the massive improvement in the feel of the brush as well as how easy and comfortable it is to hold. Makes dry body brushing even more of a pleasure and I often find myself doing sessions for over 5 minutes just because it feels so great.

Earth Therapeutics Purest Palm Body Brush

[amazon_link asins=’B000KNHJ5G’ template=’ProductCarousel’ store=’thebetbutcha-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’85304163-ce7f-11e7-a242-b5748104adf1′]

Features:  This cool-looking brush is a plant-based option made from natural Japanese palm fiber. The bristles are firm and dense which makes it a great choice for exfoliation.

This is a great option for any vegans who want to start dry-brushing but are looking for an alternative to animal bristle brushes. While the brush has been reported to shed some of its bristles when you first start using it, after the initial few weeks it will stop losing bristles and you’re left with a really great dry skin brush to help slough off any dead skin and improve your cellulite by stimulating tissue circulation.

Top Notch Premier Body Brush with Detachable Head

[amazon_link asins=’B00KG4WQA2′ template=’ProductCarousel’ store=’thebetbutcha-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’956a4ec0-ce7f-11e7-ba1f-61f5ce2c4b68′]

Features:  This natural boar bristle brush is a bit more pricey, but it comes with a long handle and is great for reaching those hard-to-get-to areas like your back.

I love the detachable handle as it means you have the option of disconnecting the head of the brush if you need to take the compact version travelling (and it comes with a travel bag!). 1 year guarantee on the product and it comes with a dry skinbrushing guide. Plus there’s a 60 day money-back satisfaction guarantee, so you can’t really go wrong with trying this product out.

Firm Brushes/Cellulite Massagers

These firm brushes for dry skin brushing are used to massage into the deeper tissues of the skin and can produce some really great results when it comes to reducing the appearance of cellulite.

Top Notch Cellulite Massager Brush

[amazon_link asins=’B00FA53Q8S’ template=’ProductCarousel’ store=’thebetbutcha-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’c51fe6c1-ce7f-11e7-a177-b5bfb8debf22′]

Features:  This brush has flexible rotating fingers which flex according to the pressure applied, so would be more comfortable to use than one with fixed nodules. In my opinion the grip holder on this one looks very comfortable as well compared to other brushes – it slips between your fingers instead of around the hand. Again, it’s plastic so can be kept in the shower for daily use.

Touch Me (®) Cellulite Circulation Massage Brush

[amazon_link asins=’B0009MI3E4′ template=’ProductCarousel’ store=’thebetbutcha-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’d3eb6fdb-ce7f-11e7-bcf1-13a867d33338′]

Features:  Wooden brush with wooden nodules set into a cushioned base, meaning the nodules will contour to your body as you use it. Regular brushing with something like this brush will have a good effect on improving the appearance of cellulite through the massaging action that will stimulate drainage through the tissues and good blood circulation.

Cellulite Massager

[amazon_link asins=’B01350N09E’ template=’ProductCarousel’ store=’thebetbutcha-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’de0e5887-ce7f-11e7-8871-a9140878127b’]

Features:  While not strictly a ‘brush’, this massager can be used with as much pressure as you like, and comes with a full money back, satisfaction guarantee. Because it’s all plastic it can be used in the shower without having to worry about drying it out again afterwards. Would be really easy to use everyday even just to soap up in the shower. This one also comes with a free ebook specifically about cellulite removal, so if you’re serious about removing cellulite this may just be a great tool for you.

Combination Brushes

If you’re still not sure if you should go for a firm brush or a soft bristle brush and want the best of both worlds, there are products out there that combine both features, and don’t cost much more. This can be a great option if you are new to dry brushing for cellulite, and you can even experiment with both sides to see what works best for you.

Try doing one side of your body with the soft bristle brush and the other with the firm bristle brush and see which one has the best effect on reducing your cellulite!

Daylee Naturals Massage Brush

[amazon_link asins=’B004J46J3U’ template=’ProductCarousel’ store=’thebetbutcha-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’ef8ec8d5-ce7f-11e7-805b-a3ac2c3d8942′]

Features:  If you can’t decide between a firm brush and a soft bristle brush, why not go for a combination brush? This compact one has natural boar bristles on one side and firm massage nodules on the other.

Sublime Beauty® Healthy Original Body Brush

[amazon_link asins=’B00CBHZPNW’ template=’ProductCarousel’ store=’thebetbutcha-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’fcd62371-ce7f-11e7-9b0c-9dfe2791970c’]

Features:  This dual-headed combo brush is a bit more pricey but it has a longer handle for those hard-to-reach spots, and comes complete with a full satisfaction money-back guarantee. Sublime Beauty have great knowledge about the skin brushing, and ship an exclusive free report on body brushing with their products.

Taking Care of Your Body Dry Brush

Proper care of your dry brush is essential, as hygiene can become an issue.

I wouldn’t recommend using the natural bristle brushes (or any other product which can absorb and trap water) in the shower regularly, as the soft bristles can easily capture moisture which can be difficult to dry out, and lead to mold growth if it remains damp for an extended period of time.

This is where the plastic firm brushes/cellulite massagers can be great as they can be kept in the shower and you can use them to apply your body wash or soap – all whilst getting an awesome massage that will do wonders for your circulation!

The plastic brushes do not require any special care, just a wash/wipe down with soapy water to remove any buildup of massage creams or oils.

For the soft bristle brushes, clean your dry brush every couple of weeks in lukewarm soapy water. An easy way to do this is to take your dry brush into the shower with you and use it to lather up, then rinse it out and remove as much excess water as possible before leaving it in a well-ventilated or warm/sunny spot to dry fully.

How Long Will My Dry Brush Last?

If taken care of properly, a dry skin brush can last for years, even up to 5 or more!

Some sources recommend to replace a dry brush every few months, however I personally don’t think this amount of regularity is necessary. If you wash and correctly dry your brush every few weeks then this will serve to remove any bacteria and oils from the bristles and keep your brush clean.

The key is to not let your brush sit in the damp where is is likely to become mouldy, and it will serve you for years to come.

Do you skin-brush for cellulite? If not, you should definitely give it a try! Other things you might like to try to reduce the appearance of cellulite are foam rolling, or home massagers like this one.

Hey Vic, thanks for sharing – dry brushing does great things for the appearance of the skin as well just through improving circulation to the area and exfoliating away dead skin cells, so you don’t need to have cellulite to see the benefits!
