Who doesn’t want a better looking butt these days?

With twerking, yoga pants, Kim Kardashian, butt implants and butt-enhancing jeans all making headlines in the media, it’s probably time that you paid a little attention to your behind.

The good news is that it’s easy to shape up your butt just like you would any other muscle, but most people don’t even know where to begin!

So, to help you out, here are some critical pieces of exercise equipment that I personally think are essential if you are trying to build yourself a better butt.

Many of these are relatively affordable and can allow you to start butt-building even from the privacy of your own home.

While some butt exercises can be done without any equipment at all, you will really benefit from some of this equipment. Many of them allow you to add resistance on exercises, which is precisely what will cause you to see the best results.

So without further ado, here are my top picks for butt-building exercise gear, ranked in order of my preference:

#1 Resistance Bands

My number 1 recommendation for home exercise equipment that will give you a better butt is the humble resistance band. These unassuming pieces of elastic will give you amazing value for money in terms of their butt-building potential.

They also take up next to no room, and can be taken travelling anywhere. If you get nothing else, go for some of these!

Cost:

These are cheap and affordable, so there’s no reason for anyone not to have a set! You can pick up a starter pack of the loop bands similar to the one below and this usually won’t set you back by more than about $10 – 20.

There are a few different types you can get, so if you’re really serious do a bit more reading about how to choose resistance bands for working out your butt.

Want a stylish resistance band that’s specifically designed for building a better butt? Look no further than Booty Bands – click here to read my review of Booty Bands!

If you want to take your resistance bands to the next level – then check out Booty Bands™ – these are a super strong resistance band that gets your glutes burning in an even shorter amount of time than regular resistance bands.

Exercises:

How to use them? Try a few of my favorites: clamshells, planks with leg raise, planks with lateral leg kicks, monster walks, standing hip abductions, seated band abductions, squat-arabesque.

#2 Ankle Weights

On par with resistance bands is the humble ankle weight. Ankle weights are a super effective way to boost your buns!

Teamed with the right kind of exercises, these will ensure that your butt is kept under the pump even as your muscles get stronger.

Why use ankle weights? Because they allow you to add resistance right where you need it. Plus they can double as wrist weights if you’re feeling super sporty.

Cost:

Anywhere from around $10-$40 will get you a decent pair of ankle weights. I’d recommend paying a little extra to get adjustable ones that can go heavier for extra versatility as your strength improves.

These ankle weights are fixed at 1.5lb each and reasonably priced. Click to view the latest pricing at Amazon.com
Another adjustable set of ankle weights from Amazon.com, and these go up to 10lb each.
Exercises:

There are so many exercises you can do with ankle weights, including: donkey kicks, supermans, lying side leg raises, rear straight leg lifts and so many more.

#3 Kettlebell

Kettlebells first entered my awareness after reading in the Four Hour Body about how they transformed one guy’s girlfriend from having no curves at all to being voted the sexiest girl in her university.

According to this book, the secret to a perfect butt is kettlebell swings. After reading this, I hit up my local gym and started swinging away.

Make sure you get a decent sized one with comfortable handles. They mostly come in fixed sizes (fixed weight), so do a little research on what sized weight will suit you best. You can get adjustable ones as well if you are willing to pay more.

Cost:

Kettlebells can be a bit more pricey, so be prepared to pay anywhere between $20 – $60 or more for a single fixed-weight kettlebell.

AmazonBasics Vinyl Kettlebell - 20 Pounds, Orange
Kettlebells mostly come in a fixed weight like this one from Amazon.com, and vary in price depending on the weight – sometimes you can get them for as low as $20 though!

If you’re after a cheaper adjustable beginner bell, check out the Empower 3-in-1 adjustable kettlebell.

Or, if you’re really serious, check out the Rocketlok adjustable kettlebell, which I think looks excellent. (It’s a bit more expensive though.)

Exercises:

So how do you use one of these bad boys?  Two words: Kettlebell swings  🙂

Of course, if you want to have some other uses for it, they also work great for plie squats, sumo squat pulses and deadlifts. Or check out these kettlebell butt exercises for more inspiration.

#4 Fitness Step

These fitness steps are popular from aerobics or step classes, but introducing a vertical height shift is crucial for some butt exercises and can really enhance your results!

Any platform will do really, so you can always improvise in this arena. A low wall, large step or sturdy coffee table can sometimes work if you want to test out how this can affect your exercises!

If you find that you’re using a height difference like this a lot in your workouts, then it can be worth investing in a purpose-designed fitness step.

Be sure to get one that can have it’s height adjusted, as a bigger height difference can make exercises harder – leading to more progress and results! You can purchase additional risers with some models for this purpose.

Cost:

A purpose-built fitness step can be a little expensive, be prepared to pay around $40 – $100.

If you use it often though, it can be worth the convenience of having it around. It beats trying to improvise some stepped set-up at the local park everyday for your workout!

This high step from Amazon.com can be height adjusted by the risers.

These fitness steps from Amazon.com are used by many gyms, but you may need to purchase extra risers to get some additional height.
Exercises:

Try these exercises on for size: step ups, curtsy lunges (stepping down to a lower surface), bulgarian split squats, and of course butt burns.

#5 The Glute Strap

Glute Strap available on Amazon.com

The glute strap is a great idea for a piece of fitness equipment. It’s designed to replace a traditional ankle cuff attachment when doing butt exercises on a cable machine.

How does it help your butt? The clever design shifts the weight to being anchored in your heel, which facilitates maximum gluteal activation; much more than you would otherwise get with a traditional ankle cuff.

You will need one of these (the cable resistance machine, not the eye-candy in center :P) :

Cost:

There are a few different types of glute straps now available on Amazon, such as:

Exercises:

You’ll need to use this one with a cable machine like you would find at the gym (or you may be able to get creative with a resistance band and anchor), but it’s fairly versatile.

Exercises include: Cable kickbacks, donkey kicks, hip extensions, straight rear leg lifts. You can also find a link to more exercises in my review on the original glute strap.

#6 Swiss Ball

Swiss balls are also known as exercise balls, which are another one of my favorite pieces of exercise equipment.

These are a fun way to exercise, and the wobbly nature of the ball means that you will build and strengthen core and stabilizing muscles you didn’t even know existed!

They are also great for glutes, and there are some excellent glute exercises for swiss balls that you can do.

If you’re going to pick one of these up, just be sure that you know how to choose the right exercise ball size for you, as there are a few different ones available.

Cost:

You can get an exercise ball for fairly cheap these days, and if you can set aside $10-$25  this should do the trick.

Black Mountain Products are one of my favorite brands for fitness equipment, as they offer both quality and excellent customer support (and warranty).

A high quality Black Mountain Products exercise ball is my recommendation. Click to check out the latest pricing on Amazon.com
Exercises:

Check out this post for 5 swiss ball exercises for your glutes.  Plus, they can double as a fun and bouncy seat. 🙂

#7 Foam Roller

Right, so this one’s not strictly for exercising your butt muscles, but rather relieving them after all the pain you’ll be putting them through!

Foam rollers are used mainly for muscle release, but another reason why I recommend a foam roller for getting a better butt is because they can be used to improve circulation (good for muscle growth and toning).

They can also reduce cellulite, through the massage process. Added bonus!

Cost:

$10 – $40 should be well enough for a foam roller, and you can get them in either smooth or textured patterns.

Basic foam roller from Amazon.com
You can also get fancier textured rollers for a more intense massage, like this one. Click to view current pricing on Amazon.com
Exercises:

Simply use your bodyweight on the foam roller to roll along your butt and legs for a therapeutic form of self-massage and muscle release.

Check out my post on foam rolling for cellulite for how to do these kind of exercises.

Time to Get Exercising!

Exercise is one of the best and healthiest ways to get a better looking butt, and anyone can do it! You don’t need all of the fancy equipment above, but it can help.

Try picking just one type that suits you best, and give it a go! The best part about this list is that most of the equipment is very versatile and can be used for many different whole-body exercises; not just for the butt.

If you’re new to butt-building, but want to exercise your way to a sexier butt, check out this list of butt-focused programs and workouts that can help.

I’m really glad this site exists. I would be one of those people that wants a butt, but not of Kardashian-sized porportions. I’d never heard of the elastic band, but I can definitely see how it would help. I’ve used kettle bells before a long time ago and keep telling myself that I’m going to get them. I just started a diet and am currently doing pilates to tone up, but I don’t think it will do very much for my bum. Very glorious post 🙂

Thanks Sammie! I would go for the kettlebells if you are looking to try and drop some pounds as well as build your bum. Kettlebell swings are actually quite a good cardio work out, so you will burn heaps of calories with them! As well as get very out of breath!

    Hi!

Great ideas on equipment and exercises for a better looking butt. Who wants a saggy tush? I can also appreciate the motivation to do it the natural way as oppose to seeking out cosmetic surgery that can go wrong and become a nightmare!!!

I am more of a no-equipment type person but I do happen to have some 8 lb weights in the house as well as resistance bands so I will definitely try out the workouts you mentioned here.

I will continue to scope out your site as well b/c I’d like to learn more about getting rid of cellulite in my thighs and tightening my love handles. They love to keep waving to others since I had those doggone babies!

Hi Mel, I also enjoy the freedom of workouts and exercises that don’t need any equipment, but sometimes mixing it up can give you some good results! Great to hear you’ve already got some resistance bands, these are seriously great and one of my favorites. Thanks for stopping by!

Jolie, thanks for providing such comprehensive knowledge on how to enhance butt workouts. I have the resistance bands and kettlebell (my favourite cardio is kettlebell swings) I have yet to sample the ankle weights, will have to look into that one.

Oh yes, kettlebell swings are one of my favorites too 🙂

I fully recommend the ankle weights Charlene! Donkey kicks or rear leg lifts with ankle weight on make for a killer butt workout.

    Hi Jolie,
Another awesome post packed with good info! I’ve gotten into the habit of doing all my exercises sans-equipment, but I do like the look of some of these ideas. I had an exercise ball but I think I bought the wrong size… didn’t realize they came in different sizes! Now I need to go check out the post you linked to about those. Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge on the subject of butts! 😀
    Love,

      Thanks Cat!
I also love the flexibility of being able to exercise without any kind of equipment, but it can sometimes lead to roadblocks in progress – the problem being that you need to add resistance or somehow make exercises harder in order to improve your fitness (and therefore your appearance)!
